SNOWMASS CREEK
A trickling aspen-lined creek winds its way through a Snowmass wilderness laden with craggy cliffs, still ponds, and fragrant wildflowers. Snowcapped peaks penetrating misty clouds above tower at a distance. What lies ahead is just more untrammeled nature, wildlife at work, and tremendous photo opportunities.
The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness Area in central Colorado. Don't just read about a relaxing area like Snowmass Creek. Experience one. Half-day, or three-quarter-day hikes to the area and back, starting near the foot of Snowmass Mountain, can be yours. This summer, bridge the gap between your wilder dreams and reality and come explore the most amazing high country in North America.
The journey begins with a glimpse of Mt. Daly's majestic peak rising in the distant blue, a welcome introduction to only the beginning of what attracts nature lovers from afar to this beautiful area of Aspen, Colorado. The hike starts out easy, and is welcomed by aspen groves and meadows. Snowmass Creek draws near. Hikers continue to follow the river and now the landscape begins to change. As we traverse through magical woods breaking into open meadows, we are afforded more incredible views of peaks beyond. Hikers will return on the same trail. Transportation access is included.
Details
The half-day round trip tour of Snowmass Creek is 3-4 miles, low impact, and perfect for the novice. Beginning elevation is 8,400 ft. elevation gain is 1,000 feet.
The big tour is a minimum of 6-8 hours, and suitable for ages 12 years if they opt for beginning at American Lake, 16 if starting out at Grizzly Lake.
June 1 – Oct. 15 rates for adults: $92 (including lunch). Packs, rain jackets and water are provided. The tour begins at Aspen Blazing Adventure Activity Center located at 555 Durant Avenue, and in Snowmass D & E at the village mall. Departure times are 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM, respectively.

Tips on what to wear/bring (from the Colorado State Parks website)
- Natural-colored clothing
- To prevent attracting wildlife avoid wearing perfumes and fragrant aftershaves or lotions
- Comfortable hiking shoes and socks
- SPF sunscreen that lasts for hours (reapply as needed)
- Hat to cover face and head
- Waterproof jacket in case of rain
- Plenty of water to prevent dehydration
- Field guide or map
- Camera to preserve the experience!
